For Birches, the year 2022 signals a new chapter. Focusing on developing their musical formula, the Northern Irish group spent last year hidden away, gearing up for brighter things. Eventually, they resurfaced again, delivering four singles perpetuating their poignant brand of indie. Fragility and honesty are the keywords here, with the band describing their own style as emo-indie. Is it too early to say we are on board?
‘Be Unknown’ is the latest of those singles, seeing the light of the day earlier this month. Introduced by an arpeggiated clean electric guitar, the track soon joins forces with Mcalinden’s brittle lead vocals. There’s a very comforting quality in them, with the young talent able to deliver meaningful lines in a tame fashion. Soon, the chorus kicks in, serving us a slice of pure, unfiltered indie, featuring choir-like vocals and anthemic hooks.
Recorded in Belfast, ‘Be Unknown’ is clear evidence of a freshly-sounding, innovative band, raising the question “are they ready for bigger stages?”. Our take is that they certainly are, just a matter of time.
Describing the concept behind the record, Birches explain: “…it feels like everything before was all a prequel and Everything to come is the beginning of chapter one of our story. ‘Be Unknown’ story is of just getting up and doing it, whether that’s calling a loved one, starting a new project or even just getting out of bed in the morning. All those things can be tough for someone and we hope this song can give the inspiration to do so.”
