Experimental Dutch Heroes Rosa Canina Champion Luscious Post Rock in ‘Foxglove’

Debuting earlier this year with three-track EP ‘Poppy’, Dutch experimental outfit Rosa Canina showcases a unique character, an artistic universe where guitars and drums are lost between noises, drones and abstract matter. Following that initial experience, the group is now resurfacing on the international scene, satisfying all the alternative listeners out there with a whole new collection of sonic jewels. ‘Am I An Amaryllis?’ represents Rosa Canina’s first album, and as such it builds on the previous record’s premises, expanding into a wider, richer musical horizon. In it, the band seems to focus on a more solid, post-rock sound, perhaps investing more in their instrumental prowess than in machine-tweaking.

‘Foxglove’ is the first single taken from the album. A slow yet rewarding journey into art-rock, grunge sensibilities and shoegaze attitudes, the track is all about Canina’s spacious and abstract guitars, often braving strange (in a good way) tones and eerie noises. The drums are a blessing in disguise. In a sea of long and free-form musical material, they retain the punch and the drive to push the song’s structure forward.

Anders Vardinghus (bass), David Gould (guitar) and Paul Natale (drums) clearly know how to play, being excellent performers and inspired creatives. They have done their part, very well. Now it’s up to you, will you welcome them into your own playlists?
