Debuting in 2020, Australian Alt-Rock and Grunge outfit Nocturnal Animals is a sort of best-kept secret in their hometown of Adelaide. With audiences mesmerized by their eclectic and visually-appeasing aesthetic, the group has been steadily growing their fanbase, to the point where we expect them to transcend their national borders. At their core, Nocturnal Animals champions a simple concept: refined, pop songwriting, elevated in rock goodness only down the line. This results in more interesting material, as they describe it; the goal is not just frantic and distorted riffs, but a more holistic offering, where the songs itself has as much to offer as their guitar punchiness.
Latest EP ‘Paint A Picture’ is the perfect example of that. In it, the Aussie talents reach the zenith of their sound – at least for now – delivering carefully crafted productions and rich melodies. Take for instance ‘A Simple Fuck You’: driving a very specific storyline, the song highlights Nocturnal Animals’ evocative lead vocals, taking their space in the midst of a fast-paced, solid arrangement. Imagine the track performed on a piano: it would work incredibly well. How many rock bands can say that?
‘Picturesque’ is a more poignant, mellow example, although always drenched in fuzzy sound matter. Notably, the Adelaide residents are excellent musicians, a feature that strongly supercharges their records.
