Some of you might remember Tom Tippin, Nashville-based talent with a knack for big choruses and relatable material. Coming across one of his tracks earlier this summer, we wrote about the project: “he’s constantly looking ahead, navigating a sound that stands at the crossroads of pop, folk and indie. The result? Irresistible sonic matter, drenched in heartfelt lyricism and catchy hooks”. Well, looks like nothing’s changed – or if ever, it got better. The evidence is his latest release, a magnetic EP titled ‘Wasted Melodies’.
Collecting past singles and brand-new material, the record is a playful, relatable and warm journey in Tippin’s kaleidoscopic artistry, managing to somehow make each song a memorable moment, a worthy instant framed on a wall. After all, that’s what Tom’s songwriting is all about: balanced between daily experience and generational struggle, recounting the challenges and the joy of adulthood.
Opener ‘33 RPM’ is perhaps our favourite episode: embracing a tougher guitar-driven sound, the track could very well become a classic. For us, it already is. ‘Chance To Love You’ follows up with Natalie Imbruglia vibes, echoing nostalgic and sentimental tones. Once the chorus hits, all hell breaks loose; this is a fantastic song, and we’ll be treasuring it for months to come! ‘Who Am I’ takes it down a notch, shifting towards indie sensibilities and mellow lyricism. The EP draw to a close with ‘Jesus Christ’, a more classic pop number, taking the tempo and energy down to a fitting ending.
Overall, a record made to be loved. Trust us, you will, just give Tom Tippin a chance.
