If you have been following us for a while, you’ll be aware of the fact that, next to mainstream pop releases, we also have a strong admiration for eclectic and experimental records, and love discovering them. Over the past few years, it’s been clear that creativity is at an all-time high around the world, pushing musicians and artists to come up with the most incredible and disparate musical formulas. One of those figures is certainly Combinator, Seattle-based sonic wizard. We are unsure how to exactly define him, but we could perhaps settle on ‘aural painter’: his ability to craft alluring and innovative arrangements is unmatched, placing the listener in a confusing yet comforting alternate universe, where genres are meaningless and sound matter flows free and unrestricted.
‘Re//Combinator’ is the project’s latest effort. A 7-track album, the record borrows from a variety of sources and aesthetics, all treated to a strong fusion and jazzy flair. A proficient bass player, Combinator combines his heavy 5-string bass guitar riffing with a dazzling kaleidoscope of acoustic and electronic beats, distorted and crushed guitars, industrial-style soundscapes. What’s surprising, are the Seattle resident’s vocals, still maintaining a friendly and relatable attitude.
From the industrial style of ‘Guest In Your Own Skin’ to the glitch electronica vibes in ‘Things That Should Be’, the record provides an authentic and disorienting journey in Combinators’ rich and nuanced artistry. Artistry that doesn’t shy away from poignant and heartfelt material, as witnessed by a cover rendition of ‘Hide and Seek’.
A complex, yet refreshing album, perhaps not for everyone. If you are brave enough to open your heart to true musical goodness, you’ll be rewarded.
