Maria Lane Explores Relationship Fallouts in New Gem ‘haunting me’

Emerging from Brooklyn, NY, singer and songwriter Maria Lane succeeds in blending themes of love and ‘creepiness’ into a song, drafting perhaps a very fitting sonic outfit for all your Halloween needs. Nevertheless, ‘haunting me’ – her latest record – is a gem worth listening to any time. In it, the listener will rejoice in intricate and peculiar lyricism, while finding comfort in mellow guitars and heartfelt melodies.

If this is anything to go by, Lane is on to something real. The single possesses such a refined and nuanced production, it is impossible to resist. There are deep layers of sounds one might not catch at first listen; and yet, after a few times, one could perceive the light xylophone-like timbre in the second verse, or the various soundscapes fluctuating around the cathartic sonic matter of ‘haunting me’. Making the difference, as always, it’s Lane’s evocative and heartfelt vocals, putting their celestial tone to good use. Magnetic are the many harmonies encountered throughout the record, sharing a certain hypnotising quality.

Lyrically, the Brooklyn resident seeks to share a personal anecdote, describing the chaos and emotional burden of ending a relationship while potentially seeing new people. As Maria Lane explains: “haunting me” is about the stage after a breakup where you’re seeing someone else that you like, but your ex is reaching out and calling you, so you feel like he is haunting you which is keeping you from this new relationship. It’s almost like in a horror movie when someone gets possessed and is being controlled by the thing possessing them”.
