There’s something unique in The Baker’s Basement’s sonic aesthetic: perhaps it is their alternative duo-driven arrangements, balancing on guitar and a paint-buckets drum kit; or perhaps, it is their joint vocals, always singing in a charming and evocative unison. What matters though, is their peculiar identity, which really makes them jump out of the scene and into the ears of music fans all across the country, all intrigued by this quirky musical duo.
While their usual material consists of charged and metaphorical storytelling framed into unconventional alt-folk, their latest offering ‘Skeleton Party’ takes a proud and fierce step up, swapping the acoustic guitars for an electric one, while relying heavily on a crash cymbal to achieve the right mood. It makes sense: the record wants to be a rougher, punchier track than the project is used to. What’s more, it is Halloween-themed, especially thanks to the mesmerising video – which you can watch below – featuring The Baker’s Basement painted as skeletons.
We have to be honest, we feel like this is their best effort so far. The track is great, and although it is a playful exercise in Halloween spirit, it feels fresh, innovative and really interesting. The electric guitar works perfectly with the minimal yet solid drumming, all resembling a new and improved version of White Stripes, among others.
This could very well be their new artistic vein, and we believe it might benefit them greatly. Let’s blow up the scene, guys!
