French Mothers Release Electrifying EP ‘When the Night Comes’

In a dazzling, fast-moving world, sometimes it is comforting to just stop for a second, take a breather, and then start again. The ‘take a breather’ part can often just be listening to some good music, for instance to French Mothers’ latest EP, ‘When the Night Comes’. Hailing from England, the charming sextet has been making waves since last year, debuting with a short three-track record called ‘The Old Hotel’.

Are they good? We think so very much. Their music is canonical in its shapes and eclectic in its attitude. While they are not afraid to experiment with the depth of their sonic field, the group also finds their signature quality in material that’s poignant and relatable, anchored in contemporaneity. It’s a kaleidoscopic, heartfelt indie material, balanced between shoegaze, soft rock and pop sensibilities.

A record developed during lockdown, ‘When the Night Comes’ feels like a definite step up for the British natives, who seem to reach a convincing and electrifying sound, ready for festivals and arenas all around the country. Featuring past singles ‘The Sea’ and ‘Wasted Our Years’, the record then goes on to deliver three brand-new singles. Opener ‘When the Night Comes’ is a fitting, short introduction: synthesised tones drive an ethereal number that recalls French Mother’s heterogeneous style.

Follower ‘Operator’ is a fast-paced, exciting gem, featuring a killer chorus that instantly connected with us. ‘Faded Golden’ gives way to a more haunting, melancholic offering, relying heavily on arpeggiated guitar and punchy drums. ‘Waster Our Years’ closes the record in anthemic fashion, delivering tons of nostalgia and emotional vibes. Airy, spacious guitars move the piece into shoegaze, dream-pop territories.

Overall, a magnificent release from French Mothers, who make the cut as one of the best bands we have heard in a while.
