Sure, it’s only her debut, but London newcomer Holda Sek knows exactly what she’s looking for. Showcasing a peculiar sonic framework, she’s able to paint intimate and cosy melodies on top of an avant-garde-flavoured production, bordering hyper-pop and leftfield electronica. In true Billie Eilish fashion, her material carries a certain remissive quality, never flowing over its limits. ‘At Twenty’ – the project’s debut single – is all of the above and many other things. At times trespassing into ethereal territories, its listening experience is rather disorientating: we are instantly hit by a mesmerising slice of gritty electronic matter, blending with Holda Sek’s warm vocals into a unique stream of aural ecstasy.
Of course, there’s no surprise here: the British talent has been active in the past under a different moniker, going as far as being featured on BBC Introducing. Holda Sek carries that breaking force over to the new project, marking an existential shift to more mature artistry. ‘At Twenty’ serves as the personal reckoning of its author: in it, the young Londoner affirms her evolving identity, together with all the nuances of being twenty years old.
