A stunning record. Simply. Emerging from Norway, four-piece eclectic outfit MesaVerde shares their debut full-length record ‘KY’. There’s something fresh and edgy about their sound. Standing at the crossroad between virtuoso dream pop and psych rock, the group manages to deliver material that’s light, ethereal, yet poignant and complex, also showcasing their wonderful musicianship.
Describing the process of writing the album as a magical time in bucolic settings (the Norwegian wilderness), talented members ørgen Apeness, Lars Fremmerlid and Henrik Schmidt confirm it was a peaceful and transcending creative experience. Joined by singer and songwriter Jonas Lundekvam, the group focused on finding their artistic formula, which they found in slick guitars, punchy drums and mesmerising soundscapes. And thus, ‘KY’ was born.
Inspired by the Japanese aesthetic, ‘KY’ (Japanese term for not being able to read the room) is certainly a convoluted album, especially in its lyricism. Eclectic melodies prove to be the perfect vehicle for MesaVerde’s obscure storytelling, exploring the depth of human relationships with metaphorical flair. The result is a pretty arty record, that will find its fitting audience in the music connoisseur, the one who will take time to listen and digest it all.
On our end, we are still mesmerized by their ability to switch the vibe so quickly. Take the fuzzy, up-tempo gem that is ‘Like You Used To Be’, and compare it to a mellower number such as ‘In Time’. Or, embark on ‘The First to Have Noticed’’s sonic journey into soft, soothing tones and ear-melding distortion. That’s what we call ‘genius’.
Overall, a wonderful album by MesaVerde, who rockets on the European rock scene with powerful mastery.
