Catlea Shares Empowering Anthem ‘Why Them’

We followed Catlea quite extensively in 2024, a journey that culminated in us reviewing ‘Bones’, declaring it “catchy and uplifting”. Now, the Cincinnati-based songstress returns with a punchy, fierce new offering, ‘Why Them’, a single that seeks to empower listeners to believe in themselves, maintaining their authenticity and values. Taken from Catlea’s concept album ‘Language Barrier’ – out now – the track shares a powerful message that we are confident will resonate with a wide audience.

Introduced by gritty textures and striking drum grooves, ‘Why Them’ then develops as the perfect blend of fuzzy guitar tones and dark alt-pop synths elements, a formula that’s the perfect match for Catlea’s evocative, dynamic vocals and her cathartic, honest lyricism. Questioning whether we should prioritize ourselves before sharing our energy with other people, the American creative aims to build a shield of resilience and self-growth, reminding us to take care of ourselves, before committing to significant others.

While such important songwriting might appear poignant at first, its final sonic form is rather majestic and loud, mirroring Catlea’s alternative, unique character. Delving into the inspiration behind ‘Why Them’, she explains: “It explores conflicting relationship dynamics when no one is mature enough to know what they want. Questions the wisdom of giving attention and affection to someone else when you desperately need to find yourself first.”
