Close Drive Celebrates Romantic Connections in ‘Race To You’

Longing for connection and romantic partnership, ‘Race To You’ uses relatable storytelling and personal experience to evoke the feeling of coming home to a loved one. Make no mistake: such a poignant message is wrapped into a lighter, more electrifying sonic and melodic livery, with Close Drive’s signature buoyant indie-rock and dreamy guitar tones dominating the aural formula. The result is psych-esque, lo-fi and surf rock goodness, a tune that’s captivating, punchy and vibrant.

Of course, such a record is perhaps not news when taking a look at the Philadelphia-based voyagers’ overall catalogue. Close Drive have been rather productive in the past couple of years (we have written about them extensively too), penning wonderful pieces oscillating between indie pop and rock flavourings. While their arrangements are inherently contemporary and lush, their songwriting is steeped in tradition and familiarity, welcoming listeners with everyday, accessible lyricism.

Delving deeper into the inspiration behind ‘Race To You’, lead guitarist John Antoni explains: “This song describes the feeling of sending that “omw!” text after being stuck in a place you thought you were going to leave hours ago. Late at night, you get in the car driving to the other side of the city to get home, or to that person that feels like home”.
