If we had to choose a word to describe Lorna Reid’s artistry, we’d pick ‘elegance’. Take for instance ‘Pale Blue Glance’, a nugget of smooth jazz blessed by Reid’s luscious, dynamic vocals. The piece is just one example of the British songstress’ longstanding commitment to music. Her latest album ‘I Will Tell Your Story’ expands greatly on that very same premise, showcasing the vast eclecticism the project has to offer.
Other than the aforementioned ‘Pale Blue Glance’, the record does a good job of balancing different influences and sonic avenues. From the neo-soul, R&B shores of ‘There For You Again’ to the Country-flavoured ones of ‘Paris in ‘95’, everything points towards a complete, varied album, a place where we can all get familiar with Lorna Reid’s imaginative, nostalgic lyricism. Elsewhere, a heartwarming bluesy character seems to emerge from ‘Pink Blossom’, perfectly counteracted by the Latin and Gipsy jazz influences in ‘Soul For Sale’.
Hailing from Edinburgh, Reid has been celebrated as “Scotland’s Norah Jones” – a definition that we tend to agree with. ‘I Will Tell Your Story’ has been produced and co-written with English singer-songwriter Boo Hewerdine, one of Reid’s mentors.
