Delving into ‘MOONFLOWER’ feels rather special. Are we even supposed to be here? Are we worthy of MiDi KwaKwa’s nuanced, imaginative artistry? Perhaps. What we can certainly do though, is describe the beauty behind her music. Marking the project’s latest EP, ‘MOONFLOWER’ takes a cue from previous single ‘DiH’, embarking on a vibrant, introspective lyrical journey lined up with evocative and elegant R&B goodness.
Born and raised by her Ghanaian parents in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany), KwaKwa’s striking work has sparked a series of positive reactions from across Europe, cementing her as a definitive one to watch. Yet, it wouldn’t be fair to expect big things – simply because big things are already here, for us all to admire. ‘MOONFLOWER’ confirms it, a slice of stunning and blissful R&B with veiled neo-soul influences.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the EP, MiDi KwaKwa explains: “I have learned from all my experiences and that has allowed me to grow as a person. These encounters have shaped the foundation of a project where I address various themes, such as mental health and thoughts of despair, the yearning for love, self-assuredness, embracing the sensuality of femininity, both its uplifting and challenging aspects, and the emotions of love and sadness from the perspective of a blossoming black woman. This is the essence behind my project, named ‘Moonflower’.”
To celebrate the release, MiDi will be hosting an EP listening party at Bar Bario in Amsterdam on 8th March (tomorrow, at time of publication) – a community venue and safe space for BIPOCs and the Queer Community, owned by a young black woman.
