The time has come. ‘Dear Infrastructure’ is among us, unveiling Marble Raft’s expansive, imaginative and buoyant artistic vision. Steeped in celestial indie-pop, the album swims in lush, ethereal guitar tones and bucolic synth work, perhaps inspired by Cocteau Twin’s whimsical new wave or M83’s restless, uplifting soundscapes. Enriched by the Swedish pair’s collective vocals, well balanced between a male and a female tone, ‘Dear Infrastructure’ wraps the listeners in a shimmering fever dream, something that also finds great support in its conceptual lyricism.
Describing a fictional tale where a couple of teenagers are stranded alone in a post-apocalyptic metropolis, wandering through concrete jungles now reclaimed by nature, Marble Raft’s new album perfectly encapsulates the feeling of hope and curiosity that one would feel in such a situation, interlaced with a touch of nostalgia and playfulness. Because of that, melodies are often accompanied by counterpointing bells drenched in shimmering reverb and vintage textures. The result is a stream of bright aural euphoria that’s a joy to listen to, a perfect outlet for internal escapism.
Featuring ten tracks, including a few past singles, ‘Dear Infrastructure’ is certainly not afraid of eclecticism and vibrant arrangements; highlights of ours are ‘Wake Up Call’ – a sparkling, intense and airy slice of new wave – and ‘Feral Haze’, a rolling, trip-hop-infused melancholic anthem.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the album, Marble Raft explain: “We wanted to create a neon-lit voyage of discovery in indie pop-form through a vast and eerie city. We hope the album will convey a sense of wonder and invoke curiosity with the shimmering dream pop-soundscapes as well as the lyrics.”
