The formula behind ‘Bottle Of Wine’ is not intricate, but it’s effective. Drenched in charming and uplifting funk-rock stylings, the record blends fuzzy guitar tones with groovy bass lines, with drums wrapping the listeners into a smooth, light dancy energy. Behind it all, we find London-based outfit Baytrees, a group that once ‘toured with the Rolling Stones’ (under a previous moniker, ‘The Thirst’). History is littered with talent going wasted. It’s good to see them back with new music, as the world needs to hear it.
Boasting a certain retro flair, ‘Bottle Of Wine’ is certainly eclectic in its references, blending elements of pop, funk and rock into a simple, catchy, hard-hitting offering. It’s also incredibly vibrant, even uplifting – all while maintaining a meaningful, emotional outlook. Brothers Mensha and Kwame are the main driving force behind Baytrees. Hailing from Brixton, they assembled the group together with Cujoue and Tom, a line-up that seems well-balanced and proficient, at least from what we heard so far.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the single, Baytrees explain: “It’s inspired by 80s classic pop rock with sprinkles of funk, about getting away, catching a flight to anywhere hot with someone you care for and getting lost with them.” Such a strong sense of freedom and enjoyment is mirrored in the elegant melodies and balanced arrangements, really leaving space for the vocals to showcase their class.
