Impulse Nine Share Intense Post-Rock Piece ‘Call of the Void’

Describing themselves as if “Mogwai, Smashing Pumpkins, and U2 made a baby genre together”, Impulse Nine do a good job of showcasing their eclectic, otherworldly nature, fiercely championing a boundary-pushing ethos that’s never truly appeased or satisfied. ‘Call of the Void’ is the ensemble’s latest effort, a striking, intense post-rock piece shifting from gentle shimmering pianos to heavy and fuzzy guitar distortions. Nuanced synth work and creative drum parts complete the experimental sonic picture.

Hailing from Tucson, Arizona, Impulse Nine makes ample use of quirky drones (influenced by fellow American outfit SUNN O)))), together with authoritative and anthemic French horns. It is a pairing that you don’t see every day, yet one that works surprisingly well. The listening experience is educational, transformative and eclectic.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the piece, Impulse Nine explain: “Music for flagging hearts and hard times. Written in the realization that even trusted news sources can be poisonous if the information is pointless drivel meant to drive us to despair. We must step back from the Void.”
