‘OKELLO SZN, Vol. 1’ is a decisively curious offering. Yes, it is a rap album (technically a mixtape). Yet, its scope of action seems to be very wide and eclectic, making for a listening experience that’s incredibly vibrant and fresh. Evidence of that is the fact that Mesmerized doesn’t usually cover hip-hop, unless there’s something in it that caters to our vibe. What’s our vibe you ask? Hazy, dreamy energy, and a strong sense of authenticity and escapism.
‘OKELLO SZN, Vol. 1’ contains all of that: among the bouncy, punchy beats, the listeners also find a wealth of nuanced synth work and retro sampling. ‘PUM PUM AND DREAMS’ is the perfect evidence of that: steeped in futuristic, leftfield tones and soulful sampling, the track is absolutely unique and quirky, with Elijah Okello embracing its playful side. Produced and written by Okello himself together with collaborators Sebastian aka Bueno and Abz the Inventor, ‘OKELLO SZN, Vol. 1’ is a curious, effective offering, a record that showcases Elijah as a modern innovator on the rap scene. Speaking about the lyricism in it, the Copenhagen-based creative explains: “This mixtape reflects an underdog story with highs and lows and most of all the chase for a better life.”
