Some might find it cliché, but personally, I cannot resist a sultry, gloomy italodisco/EBM-inspired piece. Especially, if it contains French lyrics on top. Especially if such vocals are female. Knowing that it’s easy to understand why I was so attracted to ‘Cité Lunaire’. An intense, fast-paced yet hazy gem, the record is the latest effort of Belgian mysterious duo SIIE, once again showcasing their eclectic roots and their willingness to delve into nostalgia – always with contemporary flair.
Sparking memories of 80s extravaganza – the dark side of it – SIIE reminds me of a Miss Kittin, especially her frequent collaborations with French visionary The Hacker. That said, the Belgian outfit has more grittiness on its side, and more melancholia to offer.
Such lush and dystopian aura is perfectly mirrored by the lyrics; as the pair explains: “The lyrics, both poetic and introspective, explore the desire to escape the ‘chains of existence’ and lose oneself in a parallel reality.”
