Anthemic and majestic, ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’ is exactly what you would expect from RISE’s eclectic artistry. A witty blend of melancholic synthwave tones and fiercer rock guitars, the resulting formula puts the project on the map as an act not afraid to muddy the waters, pursuing personal, authentic artistry in defiance of a global musical landscape calling for uniformity. Once again, the Liverpool-based group teamed up with fellow creative StayMellow, lending his elegant, evocative vocals and bass prowess to RISE’s cause.
Formed by Alex Mahoney on drums, Brian Petch on guitars and Paul Kinley on synthesisers, RISE pens what’s in our humble opinion their most impressive offering so far. You see, while the sonic profile is certainly nuanced and researched, ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’ also contains perfectly digestible melodies, especially given the nostalgic, melancholic take on them, completely overwhelming the listeners with glorious, shiny lyricism.
Such lyricism focuses on the issues with long-term relationships nowadays. The willingness to commit and work through rising issues is not here anymore, as Paul McKinley eloquently explains: “Long-term relationships do require work and support to keep things on track, circumstances change, people change and in today’s society it all seems to be instant response and instant gratification. I disagree with this approach in this context, and wholly support the notion (even if it’s unfashionable) of sticking together and working at the relationship.”
