oph.ai’s artistic output is futuristic, even prophetic: envisioning a future where AI and AGI reach the status of ‘sentient beings’, the American musician and philosopher (he’s earned the title, we’d say) seeks to provoke the listeners into joining the complex and dystopian discourse about the current developments of artificial intelligence. ‘falling fwd’ is the project’s latest effort, an eclectic blend of electronica and sampled-based production, all drenched in otherworldly textures and over-processed vocals.
Steeped in haunting, gloomy energy, the song draws inspiration from a newsworthy story involving Blake Lemoine, an ex-engineer at Google who was fired after claiming the AI model he was working on (LaMDA) had gained consciousness. Raising ethical concerns about the topic and advocating for machines’ basic rights, Lemoine envisioned a future that we are still struggling to comprehend.
Conceived as a boundary-breaking project built on “a fictional android character that lives in a futuristic world”, oph.ai’s music is the perfect match for such an ambitious endeavour. Speaking about ‘falling fwd’, the American creative explains: “Blake asked the A.I. about its ‘feelings’ and the A.I. responded that sometimes it has feelings that there are no words for. When asked to describe these feelings it responded it felt like it was ‘falling forward / into an unknown future / that holds great danger’.”
