Discover First Day of Spring’s Expansive, Emotional Shoegaze

The keen reader will gladly remember reading about First Day Of Spring, British shoegaze outfit we previously described as boasting “an expansive and spacious sonic imprint”. Well, we feel as though they can benefit from more attention: after all, their hazy, luscious songs are the perfect fit for anyone brave enough to dream – even in 2025. Following up on the group’s latest EP ‘Be My Hospital’, we’d like to shine a light on ‘On Monday’.

As we see it, it’s certainly the most emotional effort on the record. Expansive and full of blissful guitar tones, as well as fuzzier sections, the track oscillates between gentle dream pop to heart-shaking post-punk, all in the spirit of shoegaze eclecticism. It’s a joy to listen to, especially thanks to Samuel Jones’ tender, vivid songwriting and the band’s melancholic performance.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the track, Jones explains: “Some of the themes running through songs like ‘On Monday’ and ‘Be My Hospital’ are centred around being a visual artist and songwriter, and feeling profoundly disillusioned in your creative practice, when figuring out whether or not the work is the most enjoyable part of it – or that real success is to never have to work a day in your life.”
