Inspired by the current state of politics and his experiences as a Black immigrant in North America, ‘Lonely Winterland’ is the chilling and thought-provoking new single from Toronto-based musician, poet, and author Dane Anthony Swan. Serving as the follow-up to the artist’s previous release ‘DREAM’, a collaboration with Juno-nominated producer Rise Ashen, ‘Lonely Winterland’ now sees Dane assuming command as singer/songwriter and producer.
A haunting and minimalistic offering, ‘Lonely Winterland’ relies on a consistent and hypnotising beat to accompany Swan’s heartfelt vocals. By fusing elements of ambient electro with hints of trip-hop, Dane is able to concoct a somewhat unsettling and isolating soundscape, but it’s one too intriguing for the listener to pass over.
Before you know it, five minutes have disappeared, and you’re left wanting to press play immediately again just to make sense of it all. At least, that was my experience.
“As a published poet and author, words and lyrics mean a lot to me,” says Swan. “I really like music that demands to be listened to. Music with a message. Music that makes you think”. Objective achieved!
