Bringing joy and positivity to an overly gloomy end of January, ‘Red Again’ showcases once again the artistic elasticity offered by Los Angeles-based duo Magenta Moon. Oscillating among sleazy indie rock stylings and playful alt-pop, the talented pair likes to lay deep into their eclectic side, perhaps staying true to their need for self-expression. It’s certainly a good strategy, making sure that their music stays fresh and contemporary. On that note, ‘Red Again’ is a pretty compelling record.
Introduced by a soothing and soulful electric guitar, the track then moves onto groovy, funk-rock-flavoured drums, before exploding into a punchy, fierce and fuzzy chorus. On top of it, Elaina Whitesell’s luscious and spacious vocals particularly resonate, catching the listeners’ attention and creating an interesting contrast with the electrifying production, guided by bandmate Joey Petrarca. Lyrically, ‘Red Again’ seeks to empower us all to strive for authenticity, getting in touch with our passions and quirkiness.
As the American duo explains: “We are meant to stand out, not blend in with others. ‘Red Again’ is a call to celebrate our uniqueness and resist conforming to societal expectations. It is our ribboned reminder to you that the revolution will not be televised, and it starts with you.”
