‘The Last One’ is a revealing record. Firstly, it shows us exactly where its references hail from, exuding a prominent college punk, pop-rock livery with a certain nostalgic flair (remember Blink 182? Sum 41?). Secondly, it highlights the empowering yet meaningful lyricism in it, delving into resilience and the ability to overcome addictions. Such a message is conveniently hidden behind a seemingly euphoric livery, one that stems from the fuzzy guitars and punchy drum grooves.
In other words, ‘The Last One’ provides a satisfactory chiaroscuro, a contrast between light (the punk-flavoured instrumental) and darkness (serious, nuanced songwriting), wrapping us all into a multi-faceted, fierce listening experience. Penned by Jacob and the Starry Eyed Shadows, the project is a solo outfit, a DIY endeavour based in Glasgow, Scotland. A larger EP is in the works for later this year.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘The Last One’, Jacob explains: “I guess this release is about addiction, and love helping to overcome adversity. I don’t always have a clear idea of what a song is about while I write it. I like to let it come naturally. But I always try to write ‘hopeful’ songs.”
