Following up on ‘forts’, released back in November, American songstress Ren Genevieve returns this week with a wonderfully hazy effort, a stunning slice of nostalgia and blissful energy that’s incredibly striking and cathartic. ‘gods to ground’ is the track in question, a spacious, dreamy indie folk and pop number packed with evocative vocals and lo-fi drums. Perhaps not a record for everyone, the song is a rather leftfield offering, at least in its current form.
Yet, Genevieve’s lyricism and vocal delivery are ever-relatable, taking the listeners on a meaningful journey through self-acceptance and resilience. It also anticipates an upcoming EP, ‘tongue tied’. We are curious about where the EP is headed: more leftfield and dreamy, or returning to poppier grounds? Judging by what we have heard so far, we are confident Genevieve won’t disappoint.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘gods to ground’, she explains: “This song was a project I wrote for a class assignment, and the track felt really bold, so the lyrics reflect that. It’s about feeling confident and empowered to be yourself. There’s something freeing and fun about stepping into your own power, and that’s what this song captures for me.”
