We are big fans of huge walls of guitars. The trouble is, not everyone gets it right, at least not as right as Portland-based outfit Sorry Holly. Their music is hard-hitting and punchy, yet also evocative and full of dynamism, the perfect blend of distortion and emotions. Navigating post-punk territories, the group also comes close to shoegaze a fair few times, constantly oscillating between spacious, expansive sounds and raw, grunge-esque elements (shout out to Simon Small at Type One Studios also gets credits here).
It’s a formula that conquers us in a heartbeat, the one that makes ‘Use Your Heart’ such a great offering. Sorry Holly’s latest album, the record is out today via Sad Times Production. It features twelve impressive tracks, starting with the prophetic number ‘Earth Tones and Pastels’. It’s here that we get our first encounter with the aforementioned walls of guitars – it doesn’t disappoint! ‘Dental’ matches the same pace and energy, while showcasing Sorry Holly’s surprising songwriting ability. Vibrant lead vocals deliver tender, melancholic melodies.
The intensity in ‘Use Your Heart’ is something else; it doesn’t let go, wrapping the keen listener into an electrifying 30-minute-long musical heartquake (shout out to producer Simon Small at Type One Studios). Overall, a wonderful album, one that puts Sorry Holly on our stand-out list of the year (so far). We are confident we won’t be the only ones. Speaking about the inspiration behind the album, the American band explain: “It is a dedication to lost loves and forgotten friends.”
