Sheykh Forever Unveils Eclectic Jewel ‘Run for cover’

A quick look at Sheykh Forever’s catalogue reveals an inspired, bold outfit committed to experimentation and eclecticism. A collaborative effort, the project is guided by London-based, Iraqi-born multi-instrumentalist Mostafa Al, Sheykh Forever’s ‘chief visionary officer’. After a short hiatus, Mostafa Al returned last November, unveiling the inspiring, anti-war anthem ‘Run for cover’. In it, keen listeners can expect hazy harmonies, dreamy and spacious tones, but also a strong vintage flair.

Championing a lo-fi character that takes ‘Run for cover’ closer to 60’s and 70’s recording quality, the single is a sign of Sheykh Forever’s obsession with tape recorders and oblique creative strategies, a limitless artistic canvas that’s rather pivotal to the project’s songwriting freedom. In fact, that’s what makes it stand out in the sea of homogenous records all around it. Featuring female backing vocals, the track does a great job of instantly capturing the listener’s attention, especially through its catchy, playful melodies, hiding a deeper, meaningful message.

A DIY endeavour, ‘Run for cover’ also features collaborators Louella JC and Daniela. Delving deeper into his songwriting sources, Mostafa Al explains: “Influences ranging from the psychedelic taunts of The Flaming Lips to the emotive drama of Janis Joplin.” Look out for Sheykh Forever’s upcoming headline show at The Gunners, in London, on February 7th.
