Messy Eater was a mess not long ago, yet life seems to be looking up for him… ‘Work Life Balance’ is here to the rescue. Jokes aside, the York-based musician is writing pretty exceptional music, vintage-flavoured gems drenched in playful eclecticism and catchy lyricism. Truthfully, the project perfectly fits our modern times, catering to the overall sense of nostalgia that takes over during difficult times. Messy Eater executes such artistry in a very intelligent way, never descending into clichés or obvious sonic solutions.
Instead, ‘Work Life Balance’ takes inspiration from the likes of Talking Heads and Soulwax remixes – the “Speaking In Tongues-era”, as explained by the British creative himself – delivering a fierce and groovy sonic landscape steeped in punchy drum machines, fuzzy synths and vocal samples. Messy Eater’s vocals are constantly wrapped in a hazy, lo-fi livery, enhancing the songwriting’s flirtatious nature.
The third single to be extracted from the project’s upcoming EP (‘Starters’), ‘Work Life Balance’ is a wonderful effort. As its title suggests, it deals with the current obsessions of being productive. Messy Eater explains: “Observational lyrics about the daily work grind: ‘My life’s ambition is to be busy / busier than you / I’m buying things I don’t even want or use’.”
