‘Oil In The Honey’ might be Eldars’ debut release, yet it sounds incredibly mature and accomplished, certainly the work of a wise, talented group of musicians. In fact, the Irish outfit is not new to the game, boasting a long career in music and countless hours spent jamming together. Founded by vocalists and songwriters Phil Coroner and Paul Hogan, the pair then expanded to include guitar virtuoso Keith Beggs, drummer Brian Moylett and bassist Richard Gill. It’s a large group, especially by modern standards.
Perhaps that is why ‘Oil In The Honey’ is so refreshing and soothing: drenched in a thousand textures and mellow vocal harmonies, the track finds its authentic identity in spacious guitar tones and expansive drums, oscillating between the likes of Pink Floyd and Keane, effectively basking between nostalgia and contemporary flair.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the piece, Eldars explain: “An intriguing lyrical subject against a backdrop of beautiful ambient tones, that builds into a crescendo as the song comes to its conclusion.” Wrapped in a slightly mysterious dress, ‘Oil In The Honey’ is a fantastic effort, especially for a debut record.
