We have got to give credit where it’s due: ‘What I Love The Most’ is an impressive record, both at a songwriting and production level. It’s quite surprising, given the small yet lively following of American songstress Louise Goffin. Hailing from Los Angeles, we expect her to conquer a wider audience thanks to her latest EP. A collection of eclectic pop-lenient gems, ‘What I Love The Most’ also incorporates a fair amount of country and electronic influences, resulting in a record that’s fully modern, yet still familiar and relatable.
Introduced by ‘Whole Damn Reason’, the EP jumps straight into evocative, cathartic territories, with Goffin’s rich and luscious vocals layered over a groovy and melancholic arrangement. The chorus is catchy and electrifying, in what’s perhaps the most country and rock-oriented episode in ‘What I Love The Most’. ‘Backseat’ is still built on fuzzy guitars, yet there is a playful, empowering vibe also reflected in the contemporary drum sounds.
Eventually, ‘Dominoes’ takes the EP to a close, stripping it back to what matters the most, Louise’s soothing acoustic guitar and her charming vocal tone. Speaking about the creative process behind the record, Goffin explains: “I feel it’s my best work to date. I’m starting to get the hang of bringing a song to life and taking the helm at deliberately going after what I want to hear.”
