Not all jazz records are equal: some are extremely liquid, others are incredibly abstract and experimental. ‘It’ll Always Work Out’ is instead grounded in the great jazz and fusion tradition, a rewarding and playful album that always delivers. Built over Bennett Roth’s ambitious compositional flair and his trio featuring fellow musicians William Bohrer on electric bass and Michael Henning, the record is eclectic and technically proficient, all while maintaining a relatable and enticing character.
Perfectly at home in straight tempo territories, ‘It’ll Always Work Out’ delves viciously into funk and Latin influences, something that’s instantly clear in the title track, and its follow-up ‘With My Eyes Closed’. If you were looking forward to hearing Roth swings, that’s not gonna happen this time. But if you want to hear his groove, there’s plenty of that. And of tremendous, interesting solos.
Funnily enough, the album’s title closely relates to the wide stylistic ethos championed by Bennett: ‘It’ll Always Work Out’… it does: wherever they find themselves, Roth, Henning and Bohrer are always in control of themes and solos, taking every idea and melodic phrases to the finish line in style.
