Mint Tulip Returns with Stunning Jewel ‘Radio’

The keen reader might remember Melbourne-based songstress Mint Tulip. Celebrating her past single ‘Flowers’ earlier this year, we described it as “an ethereal and immersive little number that leaves the listener feeling as though they’re floating on air” – a sentence that well fits the project’s dreamy, evocative character. Now, we are proud to be featuring another one of Mint Tulip’s artistic jewels, in the form of ‘Radio’, a single that seemingly pushes Barnes’ eclectic boundaries even more forward.

Known as Abbey Barnes by day, Mint Tulip champions a decisively unique and quirky outlook, and ‘Radio’ illustrates the concept perfectly. Resembling a psychedelic fever dream, the track wraps the listeners in vaporous, luscious indie pop vibes, with a stream of fuzzy guitars accompanying Abbey’s cathartic vocals over a beatless production. This confirms the ‘floating’ quality we previously referred to. In that sense, ‘Radio’ experiments further on the same theme. It’s Mint Tulip embracing her inner Cocteau Twins.

Delivered with a certain lullaby-esque character, the record might be complex and leftfield in its sonic character, yet it’s relatable and gentle in its songwriting, with Barnes delving into introspective, love-laden lyricism. As she explains: “When I wrote this song, I originally thought it was a love song about someone else, about the type of love I would like to manifest into my life, but now I realise this song was always a love song to myself, about believing in myself and loving myself.”
