We found ourselves writing about Holy Fool a few months ago, describing ‘On A Sunday’ as a “garage-tinted and grunge-infused summery anthem”. Well, the Scottish rocker is now back with another charming banger, released in early December, ‘Flicker’. Only, this time around is winter that gets celebrated, although indirectly. Steeped in nostalgic grunge and garage character that makes the project so appealing, ‘Flicker’ is rather mellower and icier, perfectly fitting in with the winter season.
Holy Fools is really good at reflecting the energy around him. Connecting with the laidback, more intimate vibe Europe is currently experiencing, Lorne MacFayden (as he’s known by day) favours acoustic guitar interlaced with fuzzier tones in the choruses, while focusing on introspective, playful vocals boasting a familiar outlook. Sprinkled with Nirvana-esque references, ‘Flicker’ is a record that might take you back in time, but that will also feel refreshing, a striking change from the hyper-artificial current music landscape.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, Holy Fool explains: “Somewhere beneath the sharp static of our pinball existence there’s a calm knowing waiting to give you the fix you’ve waited an age for. My hope is that ‘Flicker’ feels like a familiar and comforting hum when it comes through your speaker.” Look out for the project’s upcoming album.
