Indie outfit svicideghost champions a personal brand of tormented, poignant material. There’s a lot to unpack in it. Sharing a strong emo aesthetic, he seeks to uncover his own experiences and struggles to the outside world, perhaps looking for connection and relatability. The final results showcase svicideghost’s harrowing, screaming and heart-wrenching vocals stacked against a backdrop of fuzzy guitars and punchy drums.
Following up on the EP ‘When I’m Gone’, released earlier this year, svicideghost opens a new chapter with single ‘Sticks and Stones’. Embracing the current pop-punk resurgence, he builds a punk/emo hybrid, alternating mellow, reflective moments to heavy and loud segments.
Is this retro? Perhaps. If you were a kind in the early 2000s, you are bound to deeply connect with the track, which frankly it’s already a great record on its own. When you then add the context around it, it all paints a glorious scenario, where svicideghost is finally getting recognition for his convoluted artistry.
Describing the lyricism behind ‘Stick & Stones’, the American singer explains: “This song is based on events that happened during and after the covid 19 pandemic. With myself losing an exceedingly close friend due to their personal insecurities and animosity towards myself without doing or knowing what I did to have them be this way towards me”.
