At the beginning of this year, we stumbled upon the velvety and soulful vocals of Merunisa, a London-based multicultural artist with Tanzanian, Portugues, and Yemeni roots.
She’d joined forces with producer CRXSSXS on a tune called ‘Anxious Avoidant’, and we immediately fell in love with every facet of her voice. Now, Merunisa offers up ‘Conscious’, her five-track debut EP that only reaffirms our convictions in her talent.
Immersing the listener in a world where the raw emotions of love, loss, and self-discovery meet polished artistry, ‘Conscious’ is a silky-smooth and textured offering of the highest order. ‘Inner Child’ is utterly intoxicating, verging on hypnotic at times, while ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’ delivers a more poppy though still undeniably chilled vibe.
‘Devil In The Red Dress’ is a song that showcases the versatility and depth of Merunisa’s work with its haunting melodies, before we end with an unexpectedly jazzy and lo-fi piece of genius titled ‘Countin’ Sheep’. It’s my favourite tune on the EP, and I’m certain ‘Conscious’ will be staying with me for some time.
