‘Making a Difference’ is truly a treasure trove of nostalgic sonic references. Built as a leftfield, abstract record, the album sees Dutch composer and sound engineer Autumn Child delivering a cathartic and cosmic stream of luscious synth tones and electroacoustic instruments, a formula that’s certainly eclectic and interesting. Introduced by the futuristic anthem ‘Making a Difference’, featuring vocoder-flavoured vocals, the record soon enters a prominent shift with follow-up ‘The Future is Music’.
Drenched in psychedelic energy and post-rock energy, the piece showcases Autumn Child’s more organic side. ‘Planet Chill’ takes it all back to the main script, with spacious bells, expansive synths and natural soundscapes, wrapping the listeners into a hypnotising, meditative state. That’s the main ethos behind the recording and one of Autumn Child’s prominent creative goals.
What’s more, ‘Making a Difference’ uses a vintage array of analogue and digital instruments, such as Nord Modular, Tandberg TD20A, Akai S2000, and Yamaha SPX2000. That’s why it sounds like it’s coming out of the ’90s… in a way, it is.
