It’s been a while since we featured Avresa. Hailing from Australia, the talented singer and multi-instrumentalist hasn’t certainly kept still, releasing a long album earlier this year, ‘Perspective’, a sizeable body of work that fully showcased Avresa’s nuanced and eclectic rock imprint. Luckily for us, he’s not done: ‘Short Sighted’ is the single that sees him back on the international scene, crafting a punchy, anthemic jewel with an equally precious message around it.
On first impression, the record presents a sonic identity that’s fuller and decisively more hard-hitting than any previous release – a signal that Avresa is getting better and better with every record, both from a technical and lyrical standpoint. On a wider level, ‘Short Sighted’ is not exactly a mystery: built on alt-rock and indie influences, the track favours distorted guitars and rolling drums yet maintains a decisively melodic outlook. This keeps it targeted for a large audience, rather than pursuing a specific niche.
Crowning it all, we find Avresa’s earthy, malleable vocals, perfectly complementing such an energetic and melancholic offering. Writing about the difficulties of changing one’s behaviours, the Aussie creative explains: “It is a reflection on how easily we can ignore warnings and repeat our mistakes, whether in relationships, leadership, or as a society.”
