Jack Elliot is the brainchild of Swedish singer/songwriter Gabriel Jemsten, a twenty-three-year-old musician with an old soul and a love for Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, and John Marty. Still relatively new to the scene, he’s an artist quickly making an impact, with his slick blend of folky and intricate soft rock.
At the end of last month, Jack Elliot unleashed his debut album ‘Far Lies’, a ten-track anachronistic story capturing a range of raw and intimate moments. From melancholic introspection to uplifting hope, it’s a record that, quite frankly, deserves everyone’s attention.
Song number two on the album is called ‘North Wind,’ and I’d like to hone in on it for a bit. Instantly timeless and full of warmth, Gabriel displays his guitar-playing prowess and impactful, Thom Yorke-esque vocal presence. It’s an utterly beautiful piece of music, and there’s a hypnotic allure seeping through that makes it impossible to turn away.
“When someone plays and sings with authenticity, it’s almost like you’re in the room with the performer,” says Gabriel. That’s what I, together with the album’s producer Joakim Lindberg, tried to capture.”
A tune that truly gets better and better with each listen, ‘North Wind’ (along with the entirety of ‘Far Lies’), proves Jack Elliot’s pedigree as a singer/songwriter. We can’t wait to hear from him again!
