Sparkle Glitch: “Music is everywhere. It’s such an integral part of the way I experience life”

Sparkle Glitch is an up-and-coming electro-pop artist hailing from the City of Angels. A lover of layered sounds and with a background in choir and classical choral music, Sparkle Glitch recently unleashed a six-track offering in the form of ‘Battle Maiden’. Heartfelt, inventive, and deeply personal for the musician, it’s an EP we at Mesmerized have come to truly appreciate.

Desperate to get to know the artist better, I was over the moon when Sparkle Glitch agreed to an interview! Taking us through the grief and trauma that surrounded the creation of ‘Battle Maiden’, her love for EDM, Dubstep, and Disco, and what “being successful” in the industry looks like for her, please welcome our new friend Sparkle Glitch!

Hey Sparkle Glitch, thanks a lot for taking the time to chat with us! I’m very excited to introduce you to our ever-expanding audience! Let’s kick things off with an easy one…What first drew you to music, and how did you discover your passion for it?

Hi! I’m so honoured to have the opportunity!

That’s a complex question to answer. Music has always been a part of my life. It’s inside me and outside of me. For me, music permeates everything. I used to have these surreal experiences as a very small child, where everything around me would take on the same rhythm. My breathing patterns, my mom’s voice, any electronic device that was whizzing, the air system – all of it would take on the same rhythm.

I no longer experience this, and I don’t know what caused it, but I often think about it. It usually happened in a very relaxed state before bed. It gradually went away as I grew older. I think that is my very first experience with something musical. That, and my mom playing her cello and taking me to her choir practice.

For as long as I can remember, songs have appeared and looped in my head, until I get them out. I can’t really think of a time when music has not been part of my life experience. I wrote and recorded my first song when I was 5 years old. The idea that I could take a song that was floating around in my head and make it into something tangible that could be shared really appealed to me. I was hooked at that point. But, it took a lot of life lessons to build the confidence to do something like Sparkle Glitch.

Now, I’m sorry to pose such a tough question so early on, but which of your songs from your ‘Battle Maiden’ EP would you select to skyrocket to the top of the charts and achieve massive success?

Probably, the song ‘Battle Maiden’. It’s an upbeat song about battling negativity with positivity and faith. It’s the title of the EP, too!

Staying with ‘Battle Maiden’, you’ve described your most recent offering as being influenced by personal experiences of loss and healing. If you’re comfortable, of course, could you tell our readers more about what inspired the creation of the EP?

I started work on this album before the pandemic (2019). In November 2020, my mom passed away. Most of these songs were written while coping with loss, grief, and all the trauma and uncertainty the pandemic caused everyone around the world.

I sat on them for a while before releasing them. ‘Bluebird’ is a song I wrote specifically about my mom. It has to do with a little bluebird in a park. I saw it a day after my mom passed away. I asked for a sign. Then I saw it. A little glimmer of blue amongst pigeons and mourning doves. In my entire life, I had never seen a bluebird in that particular park. Later, in the spring, a melody started to play in my head and that song attached immediately to the experience of the little bluebird I saw in the park.

Who are some of your biggest musical influences? And who would I see under “Recently Played” on your streaming service of choice?

Oh, that’s really tough! It’s hard to think of a specific artist. I think having a background in choir and classical choral music definitely shapes my sound. I like experimenting with layers of sound.  EDM, Dubstep, Disco, and nature influence me, too. But, if you were to look at my most recent playlist, you’d probably see a lot of ambient music, classical and lo-fi as well as a few spooky story podcasts.

German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche said, “Without music, life would be a mistake.” What would your life look like without music and what fills your days when you’re not busy creating?

It is hard for me to imagine a life without music! Music is everywhere. It’s such an integral part of the way I experience life.

Right now, I’m working more than one job. In all my jobs, I work with children. When I’m not working or creating music, I enjoy rollerskating, hiking, upcycling old clothes, making things, painting things, gardening, studying plants, and snuggling my parrot friend (who also lends his vocals on a couple of my songs).

Success is such a broad term with different meanings for everyone. What would “being successful” in the music industry look like to you?

It would mean simply having the honour and opportunity to create from the heart.

Which of your lyrics would you like to see printed on a T-shirt?

“Am I scintillating?”

Thanks again for taking the time Sparkle Glitch! It’s been a pleasure having you here! Before we say farewell for now, what comes next for you musically?

New songs! I have so many I’ve been working on and collecting!
