It’s the sixth of December 2024 and I’m ready to call it…Canadian indie-pop duo Wotts is my band of the year. Sure, last year was when my love affair with the act began, but this year, they’ve proven they’re more than just a crush – they’re a bit of an obsession.
‘sinking’ is the pair’s brand new single and, after just one listen, the tune has already wormed its way into my heart and soul. There’s a permanent warmth and comfort in Wotts’ sound, making it almost inevitable you’ll return for more.
Inspired by ‘Sam’s Town’, the classic album from The Killers, and MGMT’s latest record ‘Loss of Life’, ‘sinking’ sees Wotts making use of layered guitars, orchestral violins, and booming drums. Yup, it’s certainly different to their previous track ‘Boy + Girl’, but that’s what makes Jayem and Ricky 100 the true musical visionaries they are.
“Even though we used a couple of new colours on this song, I think we managed to stay true to our sound,” says Ricky 100. He’s spot on – and that’s the genius of Wotts – they can be experimental while still maintaining a signature sound.
What comes next? “I think we’re ready to take some bolder sonic swings,” says Jayem. Bring it on fellas! We’re ready!
