We wrote about Tommy Marsh earlier in the year, celebrating his previous effort ‘Bed Sheet Trauma’ as “perfectly fitting Marsh’s evocative yet controlled vocal tone, quite nuanced and hypnotising”. We are now happy to support the Australian rapper once again, especially given his sultry, playful and evocative latest single ‘Ladies’.
Built on a groovy and charming instrumental, the record is actually pretty R&B-lenient in its external livery. It’s also a good occasion to appreciate Marsh’s melodic vocal capabilities. He’s still moving in rap territories, but with an increasingly dynamic and ‘sung’ feel. A deeply personal and honest song, ‘Ladies’ mirrors Tommy’s desire for self-growth and independence after a series of bad relationships.
As he explains: “It is a reflection on the truth that love can’t thrive without self-awareness and self-acceptance. After heartbreak and a relentless search for connection, I strive to address my own challenges before becoming the partner I want to be.”
