There’s a mysterious, gloomy force emerging from ‘Reflectō’, a personal, eerie yet fierce aura that’s both empowering and melancholic. That’s firstly obvious in the record’s lyricism: stemming from Olive Black’s past troubled relationships – often dealing with abusive partners and sadistic tendencies – ‘Reflectō’ offers a stark look at the complexity of human encounters, and the depth some people are willing to make to control the object of their desire.
From a sonic standpoint, the production is equally dark, with minimal, bass-heavy electro-pop and Billie Eilish-esque melodies, intricate and slow-paced. ‘Tempted’ is perhaps the most elegant effort in the EP, delving into soulful influences and a lighter mood. ‘Contemplate’, previously released as a single, carries the record on its shoulder, with an intense, hard-hitting outlook that’s incredibly striking and memorable.
‘Confined’ is the perfect opener, slowly introducing the listeners to Black’s fragmented artistry. Now based in Switzerland, where she was born, Olive grew up in Austin, Texas, where the painful occurrences narrated in ‘Reflectō’ originally took place.
