Often, good music can be found where you had not looked before. We had not discovered talented songstress Mishell Ivon yet, but we are glad we have, now. Boasting a luscious, sultry aesthetic, she’s able to craft pop gems that feel catchy and punchy with a charming retro twist. What more could you ever want?
Emerging from Munich, Germany, Ivon has been releasing music since 2020. Showcasing a staggering productivity, she can boast more than 20 released to date (!), mainly navigating disco, R’n’B and electronic influences. Lately though, Mishell focused more on a ‘neon pop’ style: think about the best 80s funky pop, featuring drum machine, synthesisers and a ton of character.
‘More than this’ is the latest chapter of the series: characterized by dazzling arpeggiators and groovy guitars, the track takes a short trip to synthwave territories, eventually focusing on a hybrid style that’s representing Mishell Ivon’s deep eclecticism. Yes, eclecticism: you see, what really makes Ivon special is her ability to craft an engaging and exciting melody in each genre she’s active in. Her songwriting prowess is frankly impressive, as you can quickly gather from the glorious chorus heard in ‘More than this’.
Born out of a collaboration with Canadian producer Jordan Perry, the record describes a feeble romantic situation, where it’s clear it will just be a temporary fling.
