The keen reader might recall reading about Messy Eater earlier this year; featuring the project’s debut effort ‘Feels Good’, we proudly declared it “nuanced freshness that’s both nostalgic and futuristic”. We stand by our words: Messy Eater’s eclectic sonic imprint is rather hard to pinpoint to a single influence or even genre. Citing Beck as one of his primary inspirations, the British musician starts there and continues into 90s indie stylings, passing through playful alt-pop and electronic funk.
Now, Messy Eater returns with his latest single, a charming, groovy and euphoric piece that borrows plenty from wholesome soul cues and the always-relevant Beck. ‘I’m a Mess Right Now’ focuses on the ironic state of our lives, a constant battle to better ourselves lined up with self-help books and empty promises. The lyricism is treated in a tongue-in-cheek, decadent and comedic way, the perfect fit for the project’s vibrant and chilled-out identity.
Featuring retro-flavoured beats and a quirky clavinet riff, ‘I’m a Mess Right Now’ particularly flourishes in its massive, all-out and catchy chorus, providing the perfect resolution to the alluring verses. Spoken samples from self-help gurus also make an appearance in the record. York-based creative Pete Bott is the talented human behind the rising moniker.
