There’s always been a strong eclectic component in Downtown Patriots’ music catalogue. The keen reader might remember last year’s festive song ‘Christmas Is Here’ or World’s Mental Health Day tribute ‘No One Needs To Know’; well, English songwriter Danny Watts has done it again, celebrating snow season with ‘Angels In The Snow’, a piece that well adapts to the Christmas joy we’ll all soon be feeling.
Let’s unpack it: from a sonic standpoint, the record is a rather self-reliant work for Downtown Patriots. Watt produced and wrote the track by himself (then mixed by Robert Sellens of Decoy Sound Studio). The references are wider than the project’s usual gritty rock and grunge character, featuring a playful layer of bells and some banjo too. Vocal-wise, Watts’ deep and raw tone reminds us of Chris Rea, among others.
Lyrically, ‘Angels In The Snow’ is pretty linear, doing exactly what it says on the tin. Using the nostalgic and meaningful image of building snow figures around the festive season, the song seeks to evoke poignancy and heartwarming feelings, a mission that we can confirm has been reached. Overall, it’s a wonderful record.
