A nuanced and crepuscular effort, ‘I Don’t Know How to Die’ is incredibly cathartic and evocative. Steeped in bucolic vocals and long, otherworldly textures, the record marks the return of multi-talented creative AK Patterson. Following from her 2021 EP ‘Mettle’, ‘I Don’t Know How to Die’ serves as a stark reminder of the artistic depth the British songstress has to offer.
It also highlights Patterson’s difficult personal journey, especially in the past few years. In particular, the new single was written after having split up with her former band members, as an empowering display of resilience and personal growth. AK also had to grapple with losing her voice after a nervous breakdown. Nevertheless, meaningful art always finds its output – ‘I Don’t Know How to Die’ showcases Patterson’s bright and sapient musical wisdom, together with her elegant and vibrant vocal prowess.
On production duties we find James Trimm, packing the track with orchestral tones and abstract soundscapes. Writing about the inspiration behind the piece, AK Patterson explains: “Although the title can be misleading, I want people to hear the hope within the song. It isn’t a song about death or dying, it’s a song about never giving up.”
