‘Momento Mori’ is a little gem of an album that deserves your attention. Courtesy of Malta-based, Dutch-American singer/songwriter Chellcy Reitsma, the highly eclectic and multifaceted offering reveals a seriously gifted artist.
As part one of a double concept record, ‘Momento Mori’ translates from Latin into “Remember you must die,” a phrase reminding us of our mortality, failures, mistakes, and ultimately demise. It’s dark…sure…but the second part of the album will delve into “embracing” ‘Momento Mori’ and seizing the day without restraint or regret.
‘Dark Times’ gets the ball rolling in a rocking fashion with a hypnotic, Mark Knopfler-esque guitar, before cheery keys and Chellcy’s powerful and commanding vocals are introduced. It’s the perfect start!
‘The Darkness’ completely changes lanes and delivers a hauntingly beautiful piano-led piece, only for us to be spun 180 degrees once more with the gritty intensity of ‘Fleshbot Prison – extended’.’Boat to Nod’, truthfully, is nearly impossible to pin down genre-wise – but trust me – it’s a track worthy of your time, and ‘Sad Lullaby’ is, as you might expect, a tender moment of reflection.
The remaining five songs are yours alone to explore. What I will say, however, is that ‘Momento Mori’ is fast becoming one of my records of the year!
