There’s something incredibly soothing and poignant in ‘Hymn to Diomedes’, Casper Fox’s latest effort. A quintessential ballad, the song is truly elegant and evocative, a wonderful showcase of Fox’s vocal ability. Based in Brno, Czechia, the talented creative is originally from Denmark; geography aside, his artistic output is strongly international, with English lyricism that sounds authentic and meaningful.
Built on a plethora of stunning textures and vibrant, heartwarming piano arpeggios, ‘Hymn to Diomedes’ can be seen as an inspired take on Greek mythology, in particular on the figure of Diomedes. Reading about him, Fox was able to engage in poetic storytelling, transforming an old tale into modern songwriting by using a metaphorical attitude that’s nuanced yet sharp.
Notably, we are told that Casper used a paper box throughout the recording process, aiming for better sound quality. It all took place in his home studio. Speaking about the song, he explains: “He’s so hot bathed in blood” is one of the DMs I got from my friend Jay – It ended up in the
song as a lyrics: “Even bathed in your enemies, I find you to adore”.
