I take a great deal of comfort into The Fades’ sizeable streaming figures: it means someone out there is still enjoying rowdy, nostalgic punk. Rock is not dead yet, after all. Hailing from London, the fierce and bold sonic outfit has long bathed in fuzzy, rebellious records and striking, meaningful lyricism, refuting the industry’s push towards over-polished material. Instead, The Fades champion a cool and edgy lo-fi character, which in our opinion, makes their pieces more relatable and friendly.
‘Missed The Point’ is the group’s latest effort, and it’s completely on brand. A punchy and hard-hitting gem, it reflects on the constant recycling of old trends, something the British band have a lot to say about. Other than being a great song, ‘Missed the Point’ also serves a bigger purpose, marking the release of a special edition of The Fades’ debut album, ‘Social Misfits’. It’s been 20 years, and they’ve now found some extra hidden tracks that will appeal to their superfans.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Missed the Point’, the group explains: “It sounds suitably fresh and relevant, with a swaggering insouciance and dismissive missive about current trends that fits as happily right now as it did 20 years ago.” Perhaps that’s a nod to their long-standing history too. Music might be constantly evolving, but their punk identity is an absolute certainty.
